Starting from Zanzibar our 5 Days safari in Selous Game Reserve and Mikumi National Park is one of the classic safari to Southern Circuit of Tanzania that we offer from the beautiful spice islands of Zanzibar. Starting and ending at Zanzibar Island, this safari takes you to the Greater Selous Ecosystem which includes the Selous Game Reserve and the Mikumi National Park. Two wildlife areas in one safari program.
This package offers you a rare chance to experience real African wilderness in the few untouched areas of Tanzania. Unlike the more crowded parks in the northern circuit during the peak safari seasons, this safari tour offers you the opportunity to be in the remote African wilderness with the whole savannah plains almost for only you and your travel partners own. The package is the best for you if you are looking for the more authentic safari experience or coming to Tanzania for the second or third time and want something different.
Apart from the traditional gamevieing safari in 4X4 safari land cruisers or open sided cars, on this program you will get to experience rare safari activities among them boat safari in the Great Rufiji River but also authentic walking safari in the wilderness accompanied by a professionally trained and armed wildlife ranger who is also a trained naturalist. From the Rufiji River on the first day of your safari you will get to enjoy a motorized boat tour of the river as you search for nile crocodiles, hippos, birds and even animals that come to drink at the river. On this first day of your safari you will take a flight (booked by us) from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam the commercial capital of Tanzania. You will be picked up by your from the airport in Dar es salaam by your private safari guide and you will start on your way to the Selous Game Reserve. Selous is relatively far from Dar es Salaam and your drive will take about 5 hours and you will arrive in time for hot lunch at the lodge followed by a short rest. After the lunch and short res in the afternoon you will proceed with your first activity of the safari which is a boat safari experience in the Great Rufiji River at Selous Game Reserve. After sunset at the Rufiji River you will be taken back to the lodge or camp for dinner and overnight. Overnight at Selous Tented Camp or Selous Mapumziko Lodge.
Early morning breakfast at your lodge or camp then you will proceed with the a full spend the day doing game drives inside Selous Game Reserve. Selous Game Reserve is considered one of the best the off-the-beaten track wildlife safari destination in Tanzania; away from the crowds of the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit. Selous is the largest Game Reserve in Africa and the wildlife area measures approximately the same as the size of the country of Switzerland. The game reserve is full of wild animals and birds’ species alike. You expect to spot many giraffes, leopards, lions, hippos, elephants, impala, hartebeests, pythons, and elands. With a little bit of luck you might even spot the rare African wild dogs.
The animals in Selous are more timid than the animals in the parks of Northern Tanzania where animals and birds are more habituated due to more cars in the park everyday. Selous Game Reserve is also a great place for bird lovers with more than 350 different species of birds recorded. After game drives in the late afternoon you will be taken to the lodge /camp for dinner and overnight. Overnight at Selous Tented Camp or Selous Mapumziko Lodge.
This morning after breakfast at your lodge or camp you will check out of the lodge and go for a morning walking safari inside Selous Game Reserve where you will explore the African wilderness by foot. Led by an armed game ranger who is also a trained naturalist you will come close to many animals with the ranger advising you on the safest distance to stay from the animals but he will be coming with a riffle for your ultimate safety.
After the walking safari in the Selous Game Reserve you will proceed with the game drives in the Selous Game Reserve as you traverse this wilderness area on your way out of the game reserve via the Matambwe Gate on the other side. You will settle in a lodge later in the afternoon for relaxation and later dinner and overnight. Overnight at Selous Ndovu Lodge.
After an early breakfast at the lodge or camp we will check out and proceed through Kisaki township towards Mikumi National Park. Arriving by midday or i the early afternoon (depending on road conditions and weather) we will go on our first wildlife game drive in vast Mikumi National Park the fourth largest park in Tanzania. Mikumi National Park has generally less developed infrastructure and that has worked to the parks advantage in a way, because that has helped in preserving the wilderness in its natural state for many years. Mikumi Park allows walking safaris inside the park and therefore you will have an option of doing a walking safari guided by an armed ranger if you wish (at extra cost). Your guide will take you on an afternoon game drive until late afternoon when you will driven to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight. Overnight at Camp Bastian Mikumi or Matembezi Safari Lodge.
Breakfast at your lodge then you will be taken for your last game drives inside Mikumi National Park. Depending on your flight departure time your guide will take you back to Dar es Salaam where you will take your flight back to Zanzibar.

OUR HAPPY CLIENTS
We were on an 11-day tour of the Northern and Central/Urban part of Zanzibar with a group of 16. We could not have been happier. We were split into two groups each with a guide, Ali and Mohammed. But we were often together giving us two guides. They were wonderful, so knowledgeable, helpful and caring. They could not do enough for us. They were so open and honest about their lives we gained insights into Zanzibar we could never have had without them. They were also hilariously funny. We loved all our stops but would have liked to have spent another night in Kendwa. We would highly recommend the trip.
Very efficient tour operator. I booked the 8 days Zanzibar tour and everything was perfect. Since the beginning they were very efficient. They answer to all your questions within one day and they send all the information you need before departure. The tour was well organized, intensive because we only had 8 days but it really covered the most important places. My guide Ahmed was amazing, he explained a lot of things about the history and the culture of Zanzibar. he was always available for us and he helped to organize all the excursions during the free time. Definitely recommend them for a great time in Zanzibar.
After years of wanting to go to Tanzania, I landed in Zanzibar and in the good company of Mohamed. My booking with Khamis was efficient and she was super pragmatic about how I should go about the trip. Being a solo traveller can be expensive and I appreciated that Khamis and Mohamed were aware of this and provided me with options that didn’t burn a hole in my pocket. There was a genuine interest in curating my days to what I wanted and as a result not only did I drink some yummy coffee, eat mangoes off a tree on a highway but also watch the strange art of selling homes in an open market.
Everything was outstanding. The tour system they have set up met my needs and exceeded them. Considering that I have been on all of the tours before, I will say that they are just different than the other tour companies. Ahmed was young, very intelligent and loved sharing his knowledge and the history of his beloved country. He is very interactive with his clients and that makes it so much easier for his clients to understand what he is saying and made it easier for them to remember what he says. Thank you for making my trip go so smoothly! I will be using Wave Tours & Safari again!
My husband and I did a half day (3 or so hours) Stone Town Walking Tour with Mohammed which was absolutely fantastic. Mohammed was so unbelievably knowledgable about Zanzibar in general and had a great personality for what he's doing - very interesting historical facts and anecdotes laced with humour. Absolutely first class tour.
I can just describe this company with one word: PERFECT. Since the moment I decided to plan my vacation to Zanzibar I contacted Khamis via email and she gave me all the recommendations and planned my days. Khamis was responsable and always responded my questions in a timely manner. During my days in Zanzibar we had the most amazing time thanks to our tour guide, Ibrahim. He was always on time, he answered all our questions and explained everything with details. They exceeded all my expectations and we were very pleased. I will definitely recommend this company to anyone traveling to Zanzibar.
